New Year's Eve

The last day of the year, December 31st, is celebrated as New Year's Eve. This is a day that is set aside for shopping and buying food for the New Year's day social gatherings and dinners.

Some people start their New Year's Day celebrations early by staying up on New Year's Eve to toast in the New Year. They gather together with friends and family to herald in the New Year by watching fireworks displays, having parties, and eating and drinking.

On New Year's Eve, people listen to music, dance, and watch various shows on television that highlight events that happened during the closing year. It is a time for reflection on the past year and anticipation of the coming new year.

Around the world, starting in Somoa and other Pacific island nations, when the clock strikes 12:00 midnight, New Year's Eve celebrations start in earnest with large fireworks displays, concerts, and other events.

From Samoa, as the clock strikes midnight in each upcoming time zone, the celebrations can be tracked as they move around the world from Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Dubai, on into Germany, Russia, Spain, and England.

The celebrations continue in New York City, Disney World in Orlando, Florida, Chicago, Las Vegas, Seattle, and Los Angeles. Festivities are held in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Bogota, Valparaiso, Mexico City, Acapulco, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta and move across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii.

New Year's Eve has become the focus of many big events such as the countdown to New Year's Day with the crystal ball drop at Times Square in New York City to celebrations at Disney World, Las Vegas, and at many other locations around the world.

Some of the most spectacular New Year's Eve fireworks displays are put on at the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington, Sydney Harbor in Sydney, Australia, Red Square in Russia, The Thames River in England, and on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.
