Water Gardens Water gardens are ponds or small lakes that are built for the purpose of providing a relaxing and pleasurable atmosphere for thought and meditation. They are peaceful and soothing additions to the landscape of homes and office complexes. Many homeowners build water gardens on their property for the beauty they provide, the serinity, and as a way of making a connection with nature. Water gardens can be expensive to build and maintain. How much you spend depends on the size of the pond, materials used for construction, and for general upkeep. The types of vegetation and/or aquatic animals you want for your water garden should also be figured into the overall costs. It should be kept as a safe habitat for plants and animals and it should be environmentally friendly as well. If you decide to install a water garden, you should know and understand all environmental issues surrounding such a project. It calls for the use of certain chemicals, vitamins and minerals, and other products that will help keep the water and surrounding areas clean and fit for plant and/or animal life. The costs associated with the installation of a water garden depends on whether you install it yourself or pay a landscape contractor. The designs can range from small to elaborate, some with waterfalls and streams. Of course, the more complex the garden, the more expensive it will be. The size of the pond usually coinsides with the size of the lot. Water gardens can be installed in small areas and can also be installed on raised decks, on roofs, and indoors in certain buildings and other structures. The depth of a pond can range from a few inches to a few feet. For fish, the deeper the pond, the more protection from the elements it gives. A deeper pond provides a safe haven from extreme cold and hot weather. Water gardens can be stocked with different types of fish and plants. Sun fish, Japanese koi fish, gold fish, minnows, and other fish can be used. Plants can range from local varieties to the more exotic species. Turtles and frogs are also popular water animals for ponds. A combination of fish and aquatic plants creates an ideal water garden. Before investing in a water garden, you should determine what plants and fish can survive in the climate in which you live, what types of food they need, and what it will take to make your water garden thrive.
