Birthstones

A birthstone is a gem, maybe a ruby, diamond, emerald, or other precious stone that are thought to have certain qualities and virtues that are associated with a particular month of the year.

The stone of a particular month usually pertains to romance, good luck, or some other symbolic meaning.

Some associate the first use of birthstones with the Biblical story of the Exodus in which the Breastplate of Aaron was adorned with twelve precious gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

Throughout history, cultures with their own traditions and beliefs used the gemstones of their choice as their particular birthstones.

In the early nineteen hundreds, American jewelers decided to standardize gems for specific months and many jewelers around the world followed their lead.

Some birthstones are rare, making them more expensive than others, but they are all beautiful. They are adorned on rings, amulets, pendants, pins, and necklaces.

Collectible gems, antiques and pendants, are sold at auctions and at jewelry shows and conventions. There are several channels on televison that cater to the sale of precious gems and other jewelry.
